Welcome to my Recommended Science Fiction and Fantasy Book Author Page.

I have read all of the books listed on this site, most of them several times. If you click on the recommended book link, it will bring you to a page that talks about the author and my favorite series or books by that author. I also classify each series by what age reader is appropriate, and list them in the order that they should be read. You have the opportunity to purchase books right off the page. The authors with "star ratings" are those who have withstood the test of time, in that I've been able to pick up their books again and re-read them for enjoyment. Some of the other authors might eventually become star rated, but their books are still too new to me to judge.
If you have a science fiction/fantasy author that you love, please click on the "your opinion" button and drop me a line about them. I may also include your comments in the "bookshelf blog"

Raymond E. Feist

Raymond Feist's book Magician: Apprentice was a wonderful read and the first in his Riftwar Saga. Here is a review from Amazon.com: A beautiful epic fantasy whose true strength lies in the emotional details of its characters. Story focuses on the orphan pug who starts out as an apprentice to the wizard, Kulgan, and shows little promise. As events continue to progress, the nation faces a devastati . . .

Jenny Nimmo

I have just finished four of Jenny Nimmo's "Charlie Bones" series. They were a fantastic read and both my teenager and my eight year old are enjoying them. Nimmo writes about entertaining characters, magical plots, great villans, and sympathetic heroes. These books can be read and re-read. . . .

John Flanagan

John Flanagan has earned his living as a writer all his working life, first in advertising, then as a successful television screen writer. In his spare time, he wrote books: thrillers, comedies and fantasies. He began the Ranger’s Apprentice series as a number of short chapters written for his 12 year old son Michael. Over the years, in between TV shows and corporate writing assignments, he dev . . .

C. J. Cherryh

C.J. Cherryh is not an easy read, but she is a good read. I confess to owning most of her books, but to still having unread volumes in my shelf. Very few of her works are for lazy readers(of which I can be one). Cherryh creates universes that are truly different from the one we live in. In her books you can take nothing for granted.

Mercedes Lackey

I discovered Mercedes Lackey when I had depleted all of Anne McCaffrey's books and was looking for another good read. I started with her Valdemar series: Arrow of the Queen, Arrow's Flight, Arrow's Fall. This series is quite good, as is her Bardic Voices series. Some of her other books set in Valdemar tend to become rather gothic. I am going to highlight my favorite of her books here. . . .

Tanith Lee

Tanith Lee writes fantasy/horror books. Several of her books I really enjoyed. The others were too dark for my tastes. I list here those books by Tanith Lee that I recommend. . . .

Anne McCaffrey

I first started reading Anne McCaffrey's books in junior highschool, nearly three decades ago. I started with the dragon rider series, then the Harpers of Pern, then Crystal Singer and on and on. Anne's characters really come to life. Her books are some that I can come back to over and over. There are very few that I would avoid, though some fall into that category (mostly the later books either c . . .

Tamora Pierce

Tamora Pierce writes terrific books for young adults and adults alike. I enjoyed her Circle of Magic series, but I prefer her Alanna, Wild Magic and Protector of the Small series. She has very strong female protagonists. My teenage daughter and I pre-order her books, we enjoy them so much! These books are entertaining and fairly light. . . .
